About me
Samantha Mathews BA (Hons) Education & Science, Qualified Teaching Status, Certified HypnoBirthing® Practitioner, Child Birth Educator, Fully Enhanced CRB check
I’m Sam, an experienced teacher who's been teaching within North Devon since the mid 1990s. I’ve taught children of all ages and with a range of physical, emotional, social, intellectual, language and behavioural needs. I’ve worked within mainstream primary schools, community play schemes and in a range of other settings. For the past six years or so, I have been teaching young people and adults wishing to work with babies and children or within Health and Social Care. This has involved teaching child development and child psychology. I’m a scientist by background, having worked for the MOD as a Research Scientist and studied for Scientific qualifications before deciding to teach. I have a great interest in the Anatomy and Physiology of the growing child and pregnant mother, as well as the psychology of pregnancy. I also believe that positive communication throughout pregnancy and in the early years of life are paramount to a person’s development.
I am a mother of two young children, one born ‘traditionally’ and one born using relaxation and natural child birth methods. . When I fell pregnant with my first child I was able to put into practice many of the things I have been teaching over the previous years; I had a ‘pleasurable’ birth and realised that many of the techniques used were similar to HypnoBirthing® and decided to train as a HypnoBirthing® Instructor; I then used these techniques during my pregnancy and birthed my extremely laid back second child. I love teaching but love being a parent even more and if I can help people to get the same enjoyment from their children I feel like I’ve succeeded.
